The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Ado-Ekiti Branch on Thursday, 14th January 2021, held its first ever virtual statutory meeting to commence the New Year.
According to a statement by the Branch’s Publicity Secretary, Adetutu Oluwaseyi physical attendance at the meeting was restricted to members of the Executive and January birthday celebrants.
This development was in compliance with the Ekiti State Government directives as regards COVID-19 restrictions and regulations.
Meeting was presided over by the Vice Chairperson, Abigail Aladejare.
She welcomed all members to the meeting. While making a recap of 2020 activities, the VC admonished members to be thankful for life and a successful 2020 despite the outbreak of covid-19.
One of the highlights of 2020 is that one of our members, Obafemi Adewale, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Ekiti State made Silk.
Aladejare further informed the house that the New Year prayer which is customarily held by the 3 branches of the NBA in Ekiti State has been put on hold due to the restrictions of gathering in accordance with covid-19 guidelines.
She further announced to the general house that one of the members, Adeniyi Familoni Esq. Former Director of Public Prosecution at the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice has been confirmed a Judge of Ekiti State High Court, swearing in date to be announced soon.
Members are encouraged to continue to enhance their professional competitiveness for similar opportunities in the future.
Other issues that came up for discussion include the NBA Ado-Ekiti House which is a major project of the current Executives; the Ekiti State High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2020 which came into force in December 2020. Five copies were donated to the Branch.
The proposed sensitisation for lawyers on payment of taxes in collaboration with Ekiti State Internal Revenue Services (EKIRS) which has also been put on hold due to the outbreak of Covid-19; the 2021 Law Week celebrations; and Members January Birthday celebration. Two of the celebrants were physically present to cut the birthday cake, while others joined virtually.
