President of the African Grassroots Empowerment Foundation, Mrs Ramatu Gbadamosi, as appealed to the Federal Government to establish a National Widows Commission that will address the plights of indigent widows in Nigeria. The foundation with headquarters in Igbeti , Oyo State, is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the education of African youth, assist widows, care for less privileged children and maintaining a sustainable environment .
Mrs Gbadamosi expressed concern that most housewives after losing their husbands are always either abandoned by the families or even the government, thereby exposing them to social vices , depression , hazards and other forms of abuses.
According to her, if such commission is in place and not a unit under any agency or Ministry ,it will adequately cater for the needs and alleviate the sufferings of the widows and their families as found in other countries.
She urged the government , corporate bodies and privileged persons in the society to assist such widows with funds for empowerment —soft loans —to go into small scale businesses such as farming or weaving to partially solve their financial problems. She cautioned women against living wayward life because of financial challenges.
Mrs Gbadomosi, similarly stressed the need for governments at all levels to revive all moribund industries in the country particularly the textile industries to encourage the patronage of local fabrics .This, she said, would create more job opportunities for the unemployed youths and reduce the high rate of crimes in the society.
She admonished the political class not to forget that it’s only God that gives power to whom He wishes and urged them not to over-heat the polity as the country is preparing for the general elections but rather dialogue and work towards building a more united nation and a more dependable democracy where insecurity, unemployment and hunger will be effectively addressed.
She enjoined the security operatives to be more coordinated to tackle issues of insecurity, terrorism and herdsmen/farmers crisis other forms conflicts.
