A critical networking opportunity: Legal practitioners and surveyors established rapport at the NBA Lekki Forum inaugural knowledge sharing seminar series held in Lekki, Lagos Tuesday


His Worship, the Honourable President of the Customary Court of Lagos State, Mrs. Rosaline Akinbo, the Chairman of Ikorodu Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association,NBA, Mr. Bayo Akinlade and the Chairman of Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria, APPSN, Lagos State, Surveyor O. A. Akomolafe were among the dignitaries that graced the inaugural edition of the Monthly Knowledge Sharing Seminar Series of NBA Lekki Forum held on Tuesday 13th August, 2019.

The Inaugural Seminar, themed, Issues and Challenges of Land Acquisition in Nigeria: Public Interest Solution, was held at the Goldies Place, Opposite Lekki High Court Building, Addo Road, Ajah, Lekki, Lagos State . The programme had in attendance members of the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria , Lagos State , members of the NBA Lekki Forum, lawyers from across different branches of the Bar, community leaders and other well-wishers.

In his welcome speech, Chairman of NBA Lekki Forum, Oladotun Hassan, stated that the focus of the discourse was to create a conversation between the surveying and legal professions towards resolving the issues and challenges of land acquisition in Nigeria.

On his part, the Chairman of APPSN, Surveyor O. A. Komolafe and Co-host of the Seminar. affirmed the importance of the Seminar as a means of linking registered surveyors with lawyers to end the syndrome of patronising quack surveyors.

Mr. Osaretin Ogbebor, a surveyor and legal practitioner, who was a co-Discussant at the Seminar stressed the need for a requisite scale of charges for lawyers similar to the scale of charges of Surveyors , who take minimum of 1 million naira as fees. He also stressed the need for review of the curriculum of the surveying education to include law courses.

Speaking to the theme of the Inaugural Seminar, Issues and Challenges of Land Acquisition in Nigeria, Mr. Akinlade, emphasised the need to simplify the processes of land acquisition in Nigeria and to create a synergy between the legal and surveying professions for the ultimate public good.

In her comments on the theme, the President of the Customary Court of Lagos State , Mrs. Akinbo who also chaired the Seminar , stressed the need for lawyers to become cognisant of the nitty gritty of preparation of survey plans to aid them in land documentation.

The comments and questions session had seminar attendees probe the details of surveys and the legal requirements for land acquisition.

Wrapping up, Mr. Hassan proposed the constitution of a Joint Technical Committee of the representatives of APPN, NBA Lekki Forum and NBA Ikorodu Branch with Mrs. Akinbo as chair to draw up recommendations on how to sustain the conversation between the two professions, as well as forward proposed solutions to the government for implementation. The proposal was endorsed by the whole house.

The Seminar ended on a note of celebration, as the day coincided with the birthday anniversary of the Secretary of Forum, Ayo Ademiluyi.

The NBA Lekki Forum has been significantly strengthened by the inaugural seminar, and is set to take the upcoming Annual General Conference of the NBA by storm.

Thank you for the publication…..Just a correction on this line as regards Scale of fees “…..who take minimum of 1 million naira as fees”….The scale of fees divides charges for different areas of Lagos in terms of Local Government areas: Zone A ( High Brow areas like Eti Osa and Ikeja) , Zone B ( Medium Brow areas like Alimosho, Kosofe , Surulere etc), and Zone C ( Ikorodu, Badagry, Epe etc). Major Highways e.g. Ikorodu roads and water Shorelines are grouped into Zone A charges. As low as #350k for Zone C, #500k for Zone B and minimum of #1m for Zone A.
