The Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Calabar Branch (The Doyen Bar), in conjunction with the Bar Week Planning Committee, hereby announces the Branch’s 2020 Bar Week holding from Monday, 27th January through Sunday, 2nd February, 2020 at selected venues.
The Week, which features a Public Lecture with the main theme: Good Governance: Utilities, Social Services And The Law In Nigeria,, also considers the sub-themes: Right to Light, Right to Water, Right to Shelter and Right to clean Environment.
On parade to dissect the main and sub themes are erudite and tested Speakers. While Prof. Madaki J. Agbo (one time Senior Lecturer at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Nairobi) is billed to deliver the keynote address, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku (former Dean of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Calabar and Hon. Commissioner for Water Resources, Rivers State), Prof. Jacob A. Dada of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Dr. Yemi Oke (Associate Professor and HOD, Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos) and Hon. Eyo Ekpo (former Attorney-General of Cross River State) are scheduled to be Discussants.
The Week commences on Monday, 27th January, 2020 with a City Walk by Lawyers from the Judiciary Headquarters through the Calabar Carnival routes from 7.00a.m.
On Tuesday, 28th January, 2020, there would be health talk and free medical checks for Lawyers at the Judiciary Headquarters as well as free legal clinic for members of the public from 9.00a.m., where Lawyers would render free legal counseling to persons who have some legal issues (be they family, tenancy, probate, contract, criminal, human and fundamental rights issues).
There would be Public Lecture on Wednesday, 29th January, 2020 by 10.00a.m. at the Channel View Hotel, Calabar under the Chairmanship of Distinguished Senator Kanu G. Agabi, SAN,former Attorney-General of the Federation. His Excellency, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade, Governor of Cross River State, would be the Special Guest of Honour at that event while Mrs. Nella Andem-Rabana, SAN is billed to act as Moderator of the session.
On Thursday, the 30th day of January, 2020, there would be a Bar-Bench Forum with the topic: THE BAR AND THE BENCH: SIAMESE TWINS? This topic would be handled by Learned Silk, Dr. Babatunde Ajibade (SAN) of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association. Thereafter, there would be interactive session among the Judges, Magistrates and Lawyers of the Calabar Judicial Division and Magisterial District, where they would be expected to rub minds on issues of great concern to them as a family, with a view to fostering and building a strong Bar-Bench relationship in the jurisdiction. That event, which holds in the Conference Hall of the University of Calabar Hotel by 10.00a.m., would be Chaired by His Lordship, Hon. Justice Akon B. Ikpeme, Ag. Chief Judge of Cross River State.
On Friday, 31st January, 2020, there would be visitations to the Correctional Services Facility at Afokang, Calabar South as well as to aged and sick members of the Branch. At 4.00pm on that day, there would be a friendly football match between the Branch’s team and another team at the Abraham Ordia Stadium, University of Calabar. Thereafter, there would be Law Dinner/Awards at the Transcorp Hotel, Calabar by 7.00p.m. under the Distinguished Chairmanship of Hon. Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, JSC (Rtd), former Chief Justice of Nigeria. A Dinner Talk titled: The Rule Of Law: A Panacea For Good Governance would be delivered by Dele Adesina, SAN.
OnSaturday, 1st February, 2020 there would be enlarged ‘fit-and-proper’ aerobics exercise at the Judiciary Headquarters premises from 7.00a.m., involving Lawyers, Judges and Magistrates.
The Week would be rounded-off with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, 2nd February, 2020 by 10.00a.m.
