Statement from the NBA President

My Dear Colleagues,

I hope that the first month of 2022 was fruitful and fulfilling for each of you.

The 61st Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA-AGC) held in Port-Harcourt in October 2021, was a remarkable success despite the challenges that came with its organisation especially in the light of the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic and other setbacks.

At the 2021 NBA-AGC, not only were our colleagues able to network and socialise in person after a prolonged period of public-health safety induced lockdown, the Conference also afforded us an opportunity to deeply consider issues affecting our profession and agree on the urgent steps that need to be taken; make far-reaching amendments to the NBA Constitution; re-launch the NBA Bar Journal which had been out of print since 2017; launch for the first time a Sexual Harassment Policy for the Legal Profession in Nigeria, etc.

As we approach the twilight of the current administration of the NBA, it is important that we begin early preparations for the next NBA-AGC, during which I and other serving national officers of the NBA will hand over to a newly elected administration. To this end, I am writing to announce the constitution of the Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP) for the 2022 NBA-AGC.

The TCCP which is tasked with the responsibility of delivering a world class NBA-AGC in August 2022, is made up of the following members:

  1. Tobenna Erojikwe – (Chairman)
  2. Ronke Adeyemi
  3. Mustapha Imam
  4. Olumide Babalola
  5. Inemisit Dike – (Secretary)
  6. Blessing Udofia-Poromon
  7. Orji Uka
  8. Ada Obinna Edozie
  9. Rotimi Ogunyemi
  10. Jonathan Agbo
  11. Nta Ekpiken
  12. Omobayode Okelola

(Ex-Officio)

  1. Chief Ferdinand Orbih, SAN – Chairman NBA- SLP
  2. Mr. Ayuli Jemide – Chairman NBA – SBL
  3. Dr. Monday Ubani – Chairman NBA – SPIDEL
  4. Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose, SAN – Chairperson NBA-WF
  5. Mr. Tobi Adebowale – Chairman NBA-YLF

While the exact date, venue, theme and other details pertaining to the 2022 NBA-AGC will be announced in due course, the leadership of the TCCP is at liberty to co-opt additional members into the TCCP as the needs and circumstances require.

I thank the members of the TCCP for accepting this call to serve our noble Association and enjoin us all to accord them the cooperation needed to deliver on their mandate.

Best regards,

OLUMIDE AKPATA

President, Nigerian Bar Association
