RE: Funke Akindele and State Pardon| An Open Letter to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State by Moruff O. Balogun, Esq.

Dear Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,

My name is Moruff O. Balogun Esq.,a legal practitioner based in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Your Excellency, I write to respectfully appeal to your good conscience as one of the most humane, leading and people-friendly Governors in Nigeria to kindly grant state pardon to the actress Funke Akindele and her husband who were convicted under the provisions of Public Health Regulations, Laws of Lagos for violating social distancing regulation.

Your Excellency, the essence of punishment is reformatory, and coupled with the fact that the said actress and her husband had shown total remorse in the real sense of it.

I hereby plead for state pardon for the duo.

Your Excellency, the president Muhammadu Buhari has led by example by granting the likes of Enahoro, Alli etc pardon. I urge your Excellency to kindly follow suit. I do hope the above request would be considered.

Thank you very much for your understanding.

Yours faithfully,

Moruff O. Balogun, Esq. 08052871414.

As far as I am concerned, there is no need to appeal to the Governor of Lagos State to pardon Funke Akindele. The state wrongfully tried her and her lawyer did her in by allowing her to plead guilty. It is very likely the judgment will be quashed on appeal. After then, the humiliated artist should sue Lagos State government and obtain huge damages that will deter such errors in the future. The Attorney General of Lagos State should know that the regulation under which she was tried cannot confer power of prosecution against anybody. Her prosecution was simply malicious.
