Borno State Government announces Special Celebration of June 12 Democracy Day

As June 12 comes around Wednesday, Borno State Government has announced it will organise a state celebration of June 12 democracy day.

A statement by the Secretary to the state government, Mardi Gazali, states that Professor Babagana Llmara Zulum, Executive Governor of Borno State, invites indigenes and residents to attend the 2019 June 12 Democracy Day Celebration on Wednesday at Ramat Square, Maiduguri by 8:00 a.m, with a host of activities lined up for “this great and historic day.”

On June 12, 1993, a presidential election took place in Nigeria between Alhaji Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention, and Alhaji Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party.

The National Electoral Commission, NEC, as it then was, declared the results in only 14 states before the regime of former military president, Ibrahim Babaginda annulled the elections.

“The Government and the good People of Borno State have every course to celebrate June, 12 Democracy Day for the fact that our son, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingbe was the Vice Presidential candidate for the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election adjudged to be the most free and fair election in Nigeria. ASS tribute for their electoral victory, Kingibe have since been honoured as the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) by His Excellency, President Muhammaciu Buhari, GCFR, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.” The statement added.
