Five Nigerian students from Bauchi State have won an international debate competition in Singapore.
The five brilliant students were received by Professor Yahaya Ibrahim Yero, chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board
The five students are; Abdulbarri Yahaya, Hassan Ali Hassan, Hamida Aliyu, Maryam Ya’u and Rashida Dauda.
They returned to the country after claiming the grand prize at the Oldham Cup Debate Championship in Singapore.
Oldham Cup Debate was in 1995 inaugurated by the Debate and Oratorical Society of Singapore as a yearly event.
The championship ains to inculcate a culture of debating as means of encouraging critical thinking, fostering effective communication creating a stimulus for rigorous academic research, and building teamwork, locally and internationally
Two teachers and the chief librarian of the SUBEB accompanied the five students to Singapore— after emerging winner of the National Debate competition organised by the office of the wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari.
Receiving the students, Professor Yero said the student achieved the feat through hard work and motivation.
