JUSUN Strike: NBA Kano Branch Offers Financial Relief to Members

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Kano Branch has dug deep into its welfare funds to provide temporary financial panacea to its needy members at a time that incomes have significantly dropped due to the closure of courts.

The branch said those among its members it considered to be most vulnerable were on Monday credited with N10, 000 each as palliative to cushion the effect of the strike action embarked upon by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) for over a month now.

Co-chairman of the palliative distribution committee, Haruna Saleh Zakariyya, told Nigerian Sketch that over a hundred members benefited from the gesture, adding that his committee paid special attention to members who are mostly litigation orientated because they are the most affected by the strike.

According to him, “the branch realized that a huge number of its members are in dire need due to the JUSUN strike.”

He said in an earlier release that the JUSUN strike “has further exposed the fragility of our profession which resulted to clamor from deserving members for the provision of some financial support.”

He added  that this prompted the branch’s executive council to form a seven-man committee consisting of Haruna Saleh Zakariyya and Ismail Abdilaziz as alternate chairmen; and Khalifa Sharif as secretary.

Other members were Zaharaddeen Hamisu Kafar Mata, Salihu Umar Kududdufawa, Kudufoke Olwatosin Deyon and Bashir Tijjani.

He explained that even though the committee called for voluntary contributions from willing members, the funds utilized for the gesture was drawn mainly from the branch’s welfare account which he said was meant for such purposes.

Some members who befitted confided in Nigerian Sketch that they got some relieves from the gesture and were appreciative of it.
