Lagos State #EndSARS Panel Weighs in on Alleged Police Brutality against NBA National Human Rights Committee Secretary

The Lagos State Judicial Panel on Police Brutality, also known as #EndSARS panel has intervened in the case of alleged assault on the Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association National Human Rights Committee, Bernard Oniga, Esq, at the Maroko Police Station, urging the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to ensure that officers found liable for the misconduct are held fully accountable.

Recall that after reports filtered in on Tuesday, about Mr. Oniga’s ordeal, a member of the judicial panel which was in session, Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, had swiftly drawn the attention of the Committee to the latest development prompting it to rise in protest while directing the police boss to investigate the report without delay.

The Learned Silk gave the update as follows:

“In Re: Bernard Oniga, ESQ

“Panel met with Mr Oniga and the DPO of Maroko Police Station.

He explained that “Upon listening to the presentations, the Panel directed a full investigation into the case, that the police officers involved be properly identified and due process followed in their possible trial and discipline.

“Mr Oniga is, without prejudice to the police investigation, free to submit a Petition before the EndSARS Judicial Panel.

“The Panel will follow up with the police investigation to ensure its logical conclusion.

“Panel directed that Mr Oniga’s telephone be released to him forthwith and the DPO is to issue papers for him to go to the hospital for proper medical investigation and treatment, where necessary.

“The Panel reached out to the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State and received assurances that the matter will be given accelerated treatment and not compromised.”
