The Lawyers Network Against Corruption (LAWNAC) on Saturday 18th June, 2022, announced that it will conduct an Integrity Audit on cleared candidates for the office of President of the Nigerian Bar Association. This step is in furtherance of LAWNAC’s resolve to promote transparency and good governance at the Bar and on the Bench.
The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) had earlier in June, 2022 announced the three candidates cleared to vie for the leadership of the Bar; Chief Joseph Kyari Gadzama SAN, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau SAN, and Jonathan Taidi Esq.
In a statement issued by Tylomun Aondona on behalf of LAWNAC, “The NBA as an institution has, especially in recent times, stood as a barrier to autocratic tendencies threatening our democracy. As Nigeria heads towards an uncertain future, the role of the Bar as a stabilising force cannot be overstated.
If the NBA is to have the credibility to speak truth to power, its leadership must be above reproach.
The candidates will be subjected to an assessment based on the standards of professional conduct laid out in the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners as well as international best practices. We therefore invite the General public and members of the Bar to send comments and mitigating information with regards to the candidates for NBA President to lawnac.ngr@gmail.com
Deadline for receiving submissions is 30th June, 2022, while the final report will be released on the 8th July, 2022.”
LAWNAC commended the ECNBA on its handling of the electoral process and voter sensitization drive, noting that credible processes reinforce acceptance and legitimacy.
My name is Okunola Adewale Okubule of the 1986 Class@ the Bar as JK Gadzama. We were together@ Gumel, old Kano State, now Jigawa State together with Mohammed Bello,SAN,former AG( federation for the NYSC ,86/87 year.JK was an easy going guy generally well behaved always in the company of Bello. He is indeed one of the shining stars of the 86 Class @ the Bar,a primus inter pares ,asit were being the first from the 86 Class to take the silk
I have been watching his steady progress & rise in the legal profession, with admiration for his steady rise, conquering so many territories in the process.so so glad for him & Mohammed Adoke Bello even though I have not seen both of them since the NBA Conference,2004 in the city of Abuja
Thanks so much for the honor and privilege to make this short comment.
