Midwest Bar Forum and Egbe Amofin Agree on NBA Presidency Macro-zoning, No Commencement Date Yet

Interim Chairman of the Midwest Bar Forum, Mr. Patrick Oganwu

The Midwest Bar Forum and Egbe Amofin will begin a Macro-zoning template for the Nigerian Bar Association presidency under a new agreement.

According to Interim Chairman of the Midwest Bar Forum, Mr. Patrick Oganwu the power rotation will be in ratio of 2 to 1.

However, a commencement date for the novel agreement was not set.

Below is the statement issued by the Interim Chairman of Midwest Bar Forum, Mr. Patrick Oganwu:

The virtual Meeting between Egbe-Amofin and Midwest Bar Forum held on the 20th June, 2020 and 27th June, 2020. Both sides were eminently represented as both groups constitute the Western Zone as per the amended Constitution of the Bar Association. The two other Zones consist of the Northern Zone and the Eastern Zone.

In attendance and representing the Midwest Bar Forum were:
Chief Albert Akpomudie, SAN; Chief Charles Uwesuyi – Edosomwan, SAN; Chief Ferdinard Orbih, SAN; Godwin Omoaka, SAN; Ekeme Ohwovoriole, SAN; Razaq
Isenalumbe, Esq.; Ede Asenoguan, Esq.; Sunny O. Adolor, Esq. and Patrick Oganwu the Interim Chairman of Midwest Bar Forum.

On the side of Egbe Amofin, were: Chief Adeniyi Akintola, SAN; Chief Ifedayo Adedipe; SAN; Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, SAN; Dr. Akin Onigbine, SAN; Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN; Chief Yomi Aliyu, SAN; Mr. Adeniji Kazeem; SAN, Aare Isiaka Abiola
Olagunju, Chief Adebayo Ayodele and Oludayo Olorunfemi, Esq.

The Meeting resolved to begin rotating the Presidency of the NBA when it is the turn of the Zone to present one in the ratio of 2 to 1. That is, the Egbe-Amofin should have two consecutive shots at the Presidency whilst the Midwest shall have one shot.

The reason for this concession is because Egbe-Amofin has 6 states whilst Midwest has 2 states. This proposal by Midwest Bar Forum was agreeable to Egbe- Amofin. The issue of Macro-Zoning within the two groups was left entirely to the
discretion of the members belonging to each group.

The Meeting further agreed that for the position of the 1st Vice President, which is zoned along with the President, would be occupied by the group that is not producing the President.

Other positions, e.g. Secretary and any other elective positions shall be shared between both groups in the same ratio of 2 to 1.

What the Meeting could not agree on is the effective date for the commencement of the issues agreed upon.

Whilst some members of Egbe-Amofin wanted the issues resolved to immediately commence those who represented the Midwest Bar Forum were unanimous that the issues resolved should take effect when the rotation comes back to the Zone again because it is practically impossible at this point in time to ask any of the Candidates to step down in compliance with the rotational Presidency.

Consequently, the Meeting agreed to reconvene in the future to enable further consultations to be made with members of both groups for a decision to be taken as to the time of commencement of the issues agreed upon at the Meeting.

Signed:

Patrick Oganwu

Interim Chairman, Midwest Bar Forum
