The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA), Abuja Branch, Bulus Atsen, Friday, commended President Muhammadu Buhari on the signing the Electoral Amendment Bill into Law after years of delay.
In his statement, Mr. Atsen noted that the Act has been the subject of thorough legislative discourse and societal scrutiny among Stakeholders including the NBA and CSOs like YIAGA Africa. Expectations are high that the new Act will bring some needed changes to the electoral system and hope to all Nigerians.
The responsibility of holding the primary and secondary administrators of the Act accountable is an eternal duty which rests on our collective shoulders as Nigerians and members of organisations.
The Electoral Act, in its form, does not serve as the panacea to all the challenges bedeviling the electoral system. There is the need for a change of national attitude towards the system.
Mr. Atsen called on Nigerians, who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the Act, to resist attempts at using them to manipulate the Electoral Law or electoral system.
Mr Atsen further observed that President Buhari has signed other significant legislations like the Not Too Young to Run Act, 2018, Police Act 2020, Finance Act 2020, the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 and Petroleum Industry Act 2021, among others.
