NBA Benin Branch Sets Up Sexual and Gender based Violence Committee, First in the Nigerian Bar


The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Benin Branch — the Lion Bar — pioneers the setting up of the sexual and gender based violence committee. It’s the first by any NBA Branch.

A statement from the Secretary of the Lion Bar, Andrew O. Lawani indicated as follows:

Dear Colleagues

Please take notice that the committee earlier constituted has been enlarged and christened ‘Sexual and Gender Based Violence Committee’. The members are as follows

  1. Onyinyechi Nwachukwu, Chairman
  2. Stella Ojeme, Alternate Chairman
  3. Orobosa Okunbor, Secretary
  4. Mariam Erakhoba Ilavbare, Consultant
  5. Sapphire Adaikpoh
  6. Ivie Oliha
  7. Eghosa Osarogiagbon
  8. Loveth Osagiede
  9. Tessy Oserogho
  10. Asoro Jennifer
  11. Esohe Uwuigbe
  12. Ogechi Ilueminosen

Terms of Reference, among others, are as follows

  • To ensure the provision of effective , comprehensive and coordinated response to cases of gender based violence
  • To ensure the effective prosecution of gender based violence cases in the State
  • To represent the Bar in any fora involving issues of sexual and gender based violence
  • To liase with the Police, Ministry of Justice and the Judiciary in ensuring the effective implementation of the VAP Law
  • To raise awareness of gender based violence issues among stakeholder, survivors and members of the Public.
