NBA Citizens Engagement Committee Condemns the Shooting of a WASSC Candidate by the Police over alleged Traffic Offence

…Calls for thorough investigations and prosecution of culprit.

There is a viral video going round the social media of a a man driving a vehicle allegedly against traffic while conveying a student dressed in uniform to sit for the on-going WAEC exams in Ibadan. The video also showed a policeman shooting at the vehicle when it refused to stop and the bullet hit the teenage student, who eventually died with blood splattered everywhere.

The NBA- CITIZENS’ ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE calls on both the Oyo State Government and the Nigeria Police to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and to unravel why an armed policeman paid by tax payers decided to shoot in a busy public space and killing a teenage student without caring for the safety of the occupants of the vehicle and the members of the public around the vicinity. Sadly, the student that committed no offence and was not the alleged traffic offender was the person that was killed.

While, we await the outcome of the investigation by the Oyo State Government and the Police Force, it is important to state that the need for constant training and re-training of security personnel on the handling of fire arms must be taken seriously. The law does not allow the impunity of indiscriminate shooting in a public space when there is no clear evidence of the commission of any serious offence or where there is no threat to life.
