NBA Gombe Branch Commends Nigeria Police, Gombe State Fire Service, Volunteers for Rescuing Youth who Tried to Jump Off a Mast in a Suicide Attempt

Ahmed Tukur, Esq.

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Gombe Branch has commended the combined efforts of the Nigerian police, Gombe State Fire Service and teaming volunteers who professionally played their roles towards saving the life of a youth (identified as Umar) who attempted to jump off a mast owned by a telecommunications service provider at Checheniya Area of Jekadafari Quarters, Gombe, Gombe State.

The youth stayed on the mast for hours attempting to jump off but was luckily rescued on Sunday 5th September, 2021.

The Jewel Bar reliably gathered from one Zaharaddeen Mohammed, a volunteer staff of the State Fire Service who descended with the youth after a long fight on the mast, that the suspect claimed to have attempted to end his life due to a ₦10,000 debt charge on him.

While commending the giant effort of the police and the Fire Service as well as the full presence of the Executive Chairman of Gombe Local Government Council Alhaji Aliyu Usman Haruna at the scene of the rescue, the Bar also urged the police to thoroughly investigate the matter including the mental health condition of the suspect and take all necessary steps on the result of their investigation to prevent the reoccurrence of such situation in the future.

In a similar vein, all telecommunications service providers in the state are enjoined to not only ensure the good welfare package of the security officers attached to their masts, but also strengthen their personnel to diligently discharge their duties as the whole scenario of the suicide attempt exposed the security negligence on the side of the concerned service provider.

Finally, the Bar calls upon all parents to be vigilant about the activities of their children, while appealing to the state government to consider the appointment of Zaharaddeen Mohammed (a State Fire Service volunteer who rescued the suspect) as a permanent staff of the State Fire Service having looked at the wisdom and patience he exercised in rescuing the suspect and the bruises he sustained on his face while rescuing the suspect after all efforts made by other persons proved abortive.
May GOD continue to shower his peace in our Jewel state, ameeen.
