NBA/Macarthur Foundation Organise a 2-day Training for Legal Practitioners and Law Enforcement Agencies in Jigawa State, Opens New NBA Dutse Branch Secretariat

In furtherance of its commitment to engendering a more efficient criminal justice system, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), recently led a team of NBA Trainers in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation, on a 2-day training session in Dutse, Jigawa State.

On the 14th day of June 2022, the training brought together, criminal justice stakeholders from across the State, including judicial officers, officials of the Jigawa State Ministry of Justice, criminal defence lawyers, officers and men of the Nigeria Police, officers and men of the Nigeria Correctional Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and members of the general public, to discuss the role of the Nigerian Police in the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and compliance with principles of human rights in law enforcement.

Subsequently, the NBA delegation led by the NBA President – Mr. Olumide Akpata, officially opened the NBA Dutse Branch Secretariat. At the opening of the Secretariat, the NBA President pledged to lead the charge in ensuring that the Secretariat will amongst other things, provide the right environment for the training of lawyers in Jigawa State and beyond.

On the 15th day June 2022, the training, which was chaired by the Chief Judge of Jigawa – Hon. Justice Umar Sadiq Maigari, who had earlier on commissioned the new NBA Dutse Secretariat, again brought together criminal justice stakeholders from across the State, including judicial officers, officials of the Jigawa State Ministry of Justice, criminal defence lawyers, officers and men of the Nigeria Police, officers and men of the Nigeria Correctional Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and members of the general public, to sensitize, discuss the implementation and assessment of the Jigawa State Administration of criminal justice law, and to examine the successes and challenges so far arising therefrom.
