NBA Maiduguri Branch Condemns Attack on Governor Zulum by Insurgents in Baga

The Nigerian Bar Association, Maiduguri Branch on Wednesday condemned the recent attack targeted at Borno State Governor, Professor Umara Zulum by insurgents, saying it was calculated at stalling the return of IDPs to their original homes.

This was disclosed in a statement which reads:

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Maiduguri Branch condemns the recent attack on the entourage of the Borno State Governor; Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, mni, fnse by some suspected insurgents on the 25th and 27th September, 2020 while going and coming back from crises ravaged Baga Town, Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State. This is not the first time the State Governor is being attacked by the suspected insurgents.

The Branch is not only touched but was shocked by these unfortunate actions towards the Executive Governor of the State and his entourage which tend to undermine the Governor’s effort in returning the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes. We are also optimistic that nothing will distract or deter the State Governor’s commendable administration.

Our collective resolution is that, the Federal Government as the custodian of the security architectures as exclusively enshrined in Sections 214 to 217 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) is to safeguard the lives and properties of the citizens of Nigeria, Borno State inclusive. We strongly call on President Muhammadu Buhari as a matter of responsibility and urgency to double his effort towards the fight against the insurgency.

While the Association expresses deep support and appreciation to the security apparatus who are toiling day and nights to end the insurgency; we call on them to change their strategy and be proactive in the fight.

We equally sympathize with the families of those who paid the supreme price in protecting the Country.

Long live Nigerian Bar Association!

Long live Borno State!!

Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!
