NBA-NEC to Report Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot to NJC over Inibehe Effiong’s Contempt Conviction

The National Executive Council of the Nigerian Bar Association has passed a resolution to bring the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Fabian Obot before the National Judicial Council for alleged wrongful conviction and committal of lawyer, Inibehe Effiong for contempt.

During the deliberations, the NEC considered the report of the 1st Vice President, John Aikpokpo-Martins which showed lack of due process in reaching the conviction.

On the 27th of July, human rights activist and lawyer, Inibehe Effiong while appearing before Honourable Justice Ekaette Fabian Obot was committed for contempt of court in a defamation suit initiated at the instance of the Governor of the State, Udom Emmanuel.

Subsequently, the NBA mandated Mr. Aikpokpo-Martins to secure Effiong’s release from detention. All attempts to achieve that has proved abortive due to the Hon. Justice Obot’s unyielding stance.
