The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Uyo branch, Elder Aniema Etuk Esq has condemned the arrest and continued detention of a legal practitioner and member of the branch, Abasiodiong Ekpenyong by men and officers of the Nigeria Police, Zonal Headquarters, Zone 6, Calabar.
According to reports, Mr. Ekpenyong who is critically ill and in dire need of medical attention, was arrested alongside his bereaved sister, Mrs. Ibiangke Akaneyene Dick last Sunday evening by policemen from Zone 6 over a matter which we are informed is before a court of competent jurisdiction.
Since his arrest and subsequent detention, Mr. Ekpenyong is said to have been denied access to his lawyers and medical attention. This is totally unacceptable and a breach of his rights as a citizen of Nigeria.
While the NBA is not against the police carrying out its statutory duties as provided by the laws of the land; it must be done within the ambit of the law and the rights of Mr. Ekpenyong like every other citizen must be respected.
Once again, the NBA, Uyo branch condemn the arrest and detention of Mr. Ekpenyong and call on the police to immediately release or charge him to court if it has any case against him.
Signed:
Samuel A. Etuk
Publicity Secretary of NBA Uyo branch 9/07/19
