Ode to a Fallen Heroine by Adesina Adegbite, Esq.

What do I write? How do I compose a tribute when I’m still struggling to accept the reality of your passage? No, I certainly cannot pen down a tribute at the moment but a lamentation over your passage. The last 24hours have been most dampening and full of grieving.

Why should death chose you Hauwa Shekarau? I called you Hajia, even though you were a Christian, but you always smiled and returned my greetings with Chief AA, as you fondly called me. You were so warm and kind. Very vivacious, resilient and humble.

Just about three weeks ago, we were on the dancing floor at the International Conference Center, Abuja, dancing together during the most colorful Dinner organized under your leadership in Abuja.

Yes, I knew you had been battling with some health challenges, but you had shown resilience and unusual courage. That you could play your role so actively and effectively during the just concluded NBA Abuja Law Week gave you out as an uncommon Woman of Zeal, Character and Doggedness.

My respect for you increased in multiple when I visited your purpose built Law Office/Resource Centre edifice in March this year. I was marvelled at what you have achieved for yourself, regardless of your gender. You were a classical example of a woman that can achieve anything a man could. You were dogged in your pursuit for excellence and you were indeed an Achiever.

Your passion for service is most admirable. Having served International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in various capacities, including being the Chair, Abuja Branch, you later served in the highest office as the Country President. You lived and fulfilled your passion for promoting and protecting
Women and Children’s Rights. Hence, your dedication of two floors in your magnificent office building to humanitarian works.

Despite your already rich service profile, you still offered to serve the Bar as the Chairperson of NBA Abuja Branch. You strived tirelessly to use the opportunity of your leadership to bring lasting and enduring peace and unity to Abuja Branch famously known as Unity Bar, but most unfortunately, the sudden stroke of death denied you the opportunity of achieving this goal in your lifetime. It is my fervent prayer that the aftermath of your death shall catapult softness of heart and understanding across board and among the All Concerned.

My heartfelt condolences to the League of Past Chairmen Abuja Branch, The Branch Executive, Branch Leaders, and all members of NBA Abuja Branch over this humongous irreplaceable loss. I commiserate with the family members of our departed Dr. Hauwa Shekarau and pray that the Almighty console us all.

May your soul be eternally blessed and may the good Lord find you worthy of a place in His bosom.

Adieu Dr. Hauwa Shekarau!

Adesina Adegbite Esq.
Past NBA National Welfare Secretary.
