The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ogun-State on 20th day of August, 2020, received the executives of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ijebu Ode Branch in his office at Oke Imosan, Abeokuta, Ogun State upon the request of NBA Ijebu Ode Branch to pay courtesy visit being granted by the A.G.
The Chairman of the NBA, Ijebu Ode Branch MR. Bisi Abdul-Azeez who led the delegation expressed his gratitude to the Hon. Attorney General Mr. Gbolahan Adeniran for creating time to receive them despite his tight schedule.
In his words,”When we came on board,we resolved that there is need for us to pay courtesy visits to some selected stakeholders in the administration of justice.In that resolution, we identified your office as one of the biggest stakeholders in the administration of justice.”.
He added ,”We are here to urge your office to extend the support you gave the past NBA administrations over the year to the new NBA.”
The Hon. Attorney general discussed the issues and programmes bordering on Justice Reformation in Ogun-state, and urged the NBA to cooperate with the office of the Attorney-general in Reformring smooth Justice administration in the State.
The A.G informed the NBA of the plea bargaining guidelines which is already available to guide any defendant who intends to take the option of plea bargaining with respect to his or her case. He added that the plea bargaining guidelines would greatly be of help in ensuring quick dispensation of justice without unnecessary delay.
The A.G. equally mentioned the issue of FIAT (allowing a private legal practitioner to take up criminal prosecution). He said, due to the rate at which private legal practitioners in the state are applying for the issuance of FIAT, and had previously raised by the Chairman of NBA Ijebu Ode Branch stating that office of the A.G. is always reluctant in granting FIAT to the private legal practitioners, his office has therefore deemed it fit to produce and issue guidelines which would be followed in granting FIAT to private legal practitioners in the state,and by implication reducing the workload of the lawyers in his department.
The A.G tasked the members of the Nigerian Bar Association to equally play their roles towards the attainment of quick dispensation of justice in the State.
The Vice-Chairman of NBA, Ijebu Ode Branch, Mr. S.O Bashorun thanked the Hon. Attorney – General for his laudable justice reform ideas, and he equally assured him of supports and cooperation at all times.
