[Quick Facts] Who is a Professor Emerita?

 

A Professor Emerita is a female retired professor honoured by her university for distinguished contributions to academia.

Men who are so honoured get the title Professor Emeritus.

The title of professor emerita is granted by the university at its own discretion, and not all retired professors receive the title.

Served but not gone

Emeritus is Latin and means «having served one’s time.

This does not necessarily mean retirement, only that the person in question has left the position.

The designation is strictly awarded on merit.
