Sulaiman Usman, SAN Appointed as Chairman of the Body of Benchers Mentoring Committee

Immediate past Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Sokoto State, Mr. Sulaiman Usman, SAN has been appointed as the chairman of the Mentoring Committee of the Body of Benchers, Nigeria.

In a statement on Friday, Mr. Usman SAN expressed deep appreciation saying: “I am profoundly honoured to announce my appointment, as of yesterday, as the Chairman of the Mentoring Committee of the Body of Benchers, Nigeria.

The Body of Benchers is the preeminent statutory body responsible for the admission of qualified persons to the Nigerian Bar and the regulation of professional conduct, discipline, and continuing legal development within the legal profession. As the guardian of the legal profession’s traditions and values, the Body plays a pivotal role in maintaining the sanctity, honour, and integrity of the Nigerian Bar.

The composition of the Body reflects its distinguished mandate and includes:

  • The Chief Justice of Nigeria, who serves as the Chairman;
  • All Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria;
  • The President of the Court of Appeal and Presiding Justices of all Divisions of the Court of Appeal;
  • The Chief Judges of the High Courts of all the States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory;
  • The Attorney-General of the Federation and Attorneys-General of all the States;
  • Eminent Senior Advocates of Nigeria, appointed pursuant to statutory provisions;
  • Distinguished legal practitioners and academics;
  • The President and other representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA);
  • The Chairman of the Council of Legal Education and the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School.

In my new role as Chairman of the Mentoring Committee, I am deeply humbled by the confidence reposed in me by the illustrious body. The Committee is vested with the vital responsibility of shaping the future of the legal profession by guiding, nurturing, and mentoring young lawyers. Our mandate is to instill in them the highest ideals of professionalism, ethical leadership, and a deep commitment to justice and service to the nation.

I remain committed to discharging this responsibility with the utmost dedication and to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to promote a culture of excellence, integrity, and honour within the legal profession.
