The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Honourable Justice Godwin Abraham has described the Bar as the voice of the Bench, and as such both parties must maintain a cordial relationship at all times for effective justice delivery. Hon. Justice Abraham stated this on Friday when the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Uyo branch paid him a courtesy visit at the Judiciary Headquarters, Uyo.

The branch executive committee which was led by her Vice Chairman, Mrs. Iquo Effiong Abia had earlier commended the Chief Judge for the innovations he has brought to bear since his assumption office, especially in the areas of welfare of the judiciary staff and also the establishment of a clinic in the court premises, which will not only serve the staff, but also help lawyers in emergency cases.

Mrs. Abia also brought to the attention of Justice Abraham, among other issues, the unhealthy development whereby some judges and magistrates in the state harass lawyers who appear before them; denigrating them in the presence of their clients. She said this was unacceptable to the Bar and urged the Chief Judge to look into it and call these members of the Bench to order.

Reacting, Justice Abraham frowned at the unhealthy attitude of such members of the Bench and assured the Bar that he will take it up during the next Judges Conference. On the issue of a magistrate who is notorious for denigrating lawyers and denying them right of audience for putting on red ties to her court, the Chief Judge said that there was no law prescribing the colour of tie to be used in courts.

He said that emphasis should rather be laid on proper dressing in dark suits and not the shade of tie. He further assured the Bar that he will take the matter up with the Chief Registrar and also address it at his next meeting with the Magistrates. The Chief Judge thanked members of the branch for their support and assured them of his continous support.
