Ondo State Judiciary Creates Two New Criminal Divisions of the High Court

The Chief Judge of Ondo State, Hon. Justice Williams Akintoroye has directed the immediate establishment of two criminal divisions of the High Court in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The directive is sequel to the request of the Ondo State Government, through the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir Charles Titiloye ksm, that two Courts be designated solely for the hearing of criminal cases in order to accelerate criminal trials before the Ondo State High Court.

The measure is to address the delay in the trial of suspects occasioned by transportation and security logistic problems involved in the daily movement of suspects on trial from the Correctional Centre in Akure to Courts in other parts of the State.

This step is therefore aimed at fast-tracking the hearing of criminal cases and the decongestion of the Correctional Centres in Ondo state.

Before now, the High Court inside Olokuta Correctional Centre, being the only designated Criminal Division of the High Court in the State, had been overwhelmed with criminal cases.

The two new Criminal Divisions will sit daily at Courts 6 and 7, High Court Complex, Oba Osupa (Hospital) Road, Akure.
The two Courts will handle all criminal cases to the exclusion of other High Courts.

Stakeholders in the justice sector, lawyers and litigants are to take note of this development.

Signed:

Kola M. Adeniyi, Esq.
Special Assistant to the Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ondo State.
